The bus to Pai was lots of fun. They don't make seats on local buses to
sizes that could fit an average Westerner. I had to sit sideways because
my knees wouldn't even fit in the chairs. It was all worthwhile, Pai was the
perfect relaxing getaway from the city. It was a much smaller farming town
with a few things for travellers to be entertained by. Matt and I rented
motorbikes for a day and rode out of town to the elephant camps, the Pai
Canyon, a big waterfall, a hot springs, and a really great viewpoint of
the valley. Most of the time in Pai was spent just relaxing and reading
and writing, but after that got old, white water rafting sounded like a
fun option. We rafted down the Pai river for 2 days. Now, granted,
the rapids weren't quite as perilous as we were expecting, but the fear factor
was increased by our completely insane/inexperienced rafting guide. He
fell out of the boat three times while the rest of us never fell out once.
He liked to scream like a little girl whenever we went over slight rapids and
aimed us directly over the big rocks. He was pretty funny, though.
We lazied around for another day and then went back to meet Ryan in Chiang Mai
and head down on the train to Bangkok.
